Diamond District, the DMV trio of Oddisee, yU and Uptown XO have long been one of backpack rap’s best kept secrets.

After a few years dormant while Oddisee built his repertoire as a dual threat producer-MC and the others pursued their solo endeavors, the group is back with “First Step,” the debut track off their upcoming March on Washington project.

The beat whirs with Oddisee’s trademark squealing synths and hard-hitting break drums, and yU in particular steps up with his verse.

As with much of Diamond District’s work there is a conscious, slightly political bent to the lyrics, but “First Step” is more of a classy gritty rap banger than a call to action.
