That Poppy – “Everybody Wants to Be Poppy”
That Poppy isn’t necessarily the typical artist we spotlight, but when I received the link to her lead single “Everybody Wants to be Poppy” I couldn’t help but be intrigued.
The Island Records signee has shades of Charli XCX and Icona Pop, as you’ll surely hear on the single, but she’s more than your typical would-be pop star. The song is a mix of pop punk fuzz and early 2000s synths, and has an enjoyably camp call-and-response quality that is surely fantastic live.
Poppy has a nice presence on the mic, and elevates what could be a generic radi track into something more.
It’ll be fascinating to see where she goes this year, because Poppy has a chance to be one of 2015’s breakout musical stars.
