Tennis Shoes – Letter
His debut EP Tsantsou may be dropping tomorrow, but Private Stock MC Tennis Shoes decided to give us one last early snippet with the velvety love song “Letter.”
Over a smooth, soulful, synth-heavy instrumental, Tennis Shoes showcases not only his lyricism, but also a pretty workable falsetto that really sells the emotion of the track.
That’s not to say that “Letter” isn’t hip-hop by any means, the beat comes with hard-hitting drums and booming horns on the hook that give it serious knock.
With Tennis Shoes’ candid lyrics and his effortless switch between rapping and crooning there’s some Childish Gambino overtones, but he stays true to the electronic influence that has characterized much of his early music.
“Letter” isn’t belittling or patronizing either, it’s an open, honest track that shows respect for women in a way that’s always refreshing to hear in rap nowadays.
If the rest of the EP is this good, it’s safe to say Tennis Shoes’ profile is about to be on the rise.
Stay tuned to PGM for more updates on Tennis Shoes, including the release of “Tsantsou.”
