Danny Brown & Clams Casino – Worth It
Adult Swim has been a surprising source of quality hip-hop over the past few years. They’ve worked with William Street Records and released projects like Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music and Danger Doom’s Occult Hymn EP.
Now, as part of their series of free summer singles, they’re gifting us a shiny new collaboration between Danny Brown and producer Clams Casino, entitled “Worth It.”
In my opinion, Brown has always been at his best when he’s more subdued and pensive. For as fun as molly-popping Danny is, it undersells his lyrical ability to a degree.
Here, Brown and Clams Casino, who has crafted minimal soundscapes for the likes of A$AP Rocky, Vince Staples and A$AP Ferg, find a perfect medium between the two sides of Brown.
The track is cerebral and dark, reflecting on the spoils of rap success, but also unstructured in a way that makes Brown’s bars pop. The beat is punctuated by an ominous bass line and squealing key stabs that sound more James Ellroy than A$AP Mob.
Ultimately, “Worth It” is a great reminder of Brown’s talent, and an important one since he hasn’t put out much music since Old dropped in 2013.
