Sam Sloan – Disco
I accept full responsibility for missing Sam Sloan’s “Disco” when it came out in early May, but this single is good enough to merit a post two months after the fact.
Sloan’s track is a dark, winding masterpiece that incorporates everything we love about the contemporary indie R&B sound coming out of the Toronto/Ontario area.
Over a syrupy instrumental of synths and anguished vocal samples, Sloan sings earnestly about his struggle for recognition and a dysfunctional relationship.
“Oh you know I love your fake smile/Just enough to keep me breathing with my face down,” he sings.
Sloan is reminiscent of PGM favorites like Royce Wood Junior and Sam Sure, and his willingness to twist and distort his vocals makes the track engaging throughout.
The constant pitch-shifting on the hook is a great touch that highlights his terrific touch behind the boards. Yes, he also produces.
Indie R&B artists are a dime a dozen nowadays, but make sure you keep an ear out for Sam Sloan, because he’s doing something special.
