Khary Durgan - "Swim Team" (EP)

Khary Durgan – “Swim Team” (EP)

Rhode Island isn’t exactly renowned as a hip-hop hotbed, but newcomer Khary Durgan is aiming to raise its profile with his outstanding Swim Team EP that dropped this week.

Durgan’s sound is a little reminiscent of Childish Gambino, but he’s not quite as self-involved. His unique flow, subject matter and introspection actually reminds me a lot of Logic.

The standout track on Swim Team is the title cut with Rome Fortune, a synth-fueled banger that bangs without being too ignorant. Other highlights include “Peace ‘n Shit” and the Dee Goodz collaboration “Hold Up,” where Durgan proves his MC merit over some classic break drums.

That said, the whole EP is incredibly listenable, and one of the best new rap releases of the fall. And best of all, you only need to like his Facebook page to snag a free download.
