Tallows – Sprawl (ft. Samantha Crain)

Now this is how you introduce your band to the world.

Oklahoma City quartet Tallows has released their share of quality tracks over the past couple years, but their new single “Sprawl” is an entirely different beast. The band has experimented with a quirky blend of classic indie pop and electronic, and their aptly named track covers a ton of ground in its five-and-a-half minute run time.

Comparison-wise, I was initially drawn to experimental Austin pop group SPEAK, a personal favorite, and British band Peace, both of whom are highly fluid in their sounds and still make undeniably infectious music.

“Sprawl” is definitely a slow-burner. The drums are a minimalistic mix of hi-hats and snares, with an electronic kit coming in at the crescendo. The guitar too is little more than a suggestion at the beginning, but steadily grows as the song proceeds, reinforced by a wall of synths.

What most sells “Sprawl” is the vocal harmonies, and the sultry voice of Samantha Crain gives the track even more resonance.

Tallows’ album Waist Deep comes out Sept. 8th, and you should expect to see plenty more of them on PGM until then.
